Tips For Organic Gardening
Helping to maintain an ecological
lifestyle is not at all difficult, time consuming or expensive. In fact, by
following a few simple steps you’ll find such a lifestyle soon becomes one of
pleasure. The benefits you achieve will provide a tremendous sense of
satisfaction as well as making a difference to your surroundings. It will also
be of help the environment and minimize climate change.
We list some very simple steps here, but
they all make a difference and are well worth implementing.
Remember that it is essential to conserve
water which is a precious commodity and is also, in today’s world, becoming
evermore expensive. There are many different ways for gardeners to save water
which depend on the size of garden, plants grown, garden layout etc.
But even the smallest garden can save a
considerable amount of water over a 12 month period. One easy method is to
collect rainwater. Buy a Water Butt or use plastic containers to collect the
water. In a more developed garden it is quite easy to divert rainwater from a
roof into a water butt or other storage container. We have several articles
available on water conservation and storage on our website and in our
Newsletters. (www.eco-organic-gardening.co.uk)
Water your garden in the mornings, not in
the evening. This helps to keep predators at bay, which are more active at
night. It will also supply the plants’ roots with the moisture they need during
the day. If possible always use a watering can, not a hose-pipe. If you have to
use a hose, make sure it is fitted with a trigger operated gun so water isn’t
wasted as you move about the garden. Also make sure you direct the water at the
base of the plant, not at the leaves. It’s the roots of the plant which need the
water, not the leaves!
If you have a lawn, don’t cut the grass
any shorter than 4 cm. This helps the grass to retain any moisture and
consequently doesn’t need as much watering.
Lawn cuttings can be put onto a compost
heap or used as mulch around developing plants. Whilst on the subject of lawns,
it’s worth remembering that petrol mowers are heavy polluters of the atmosphere.
It is claimed that they produce as much carbon in one hour as 40 cars. If you
must use a power mower use an electric one. The old `push-push` ones are the
most environmentally friendly and will help to keep you fit!
One interesting and environmentally
friendly method involves encouraging wildlife into your garden. This helps to
deter predators and makes your garden a much more attractive and welcoming place
when wildlife becomes a part of it. More information about this subject is
available at our website and in our Newsletters at:-

Water features are very popular and can be
a great advantage for organic gardeners. They encourage wildlife and are an
asset to any garden, particularly if the water feature has some fish and rock
formations, you can easily include a pump. There are many solar pumps
available, which aren’t too expensive and very eco friendly.
When you look around your garden, with a
little planning and a few alterations it’s surprising how environmentally
efficient you become. If you need any help or advice about this subject don’t
hesitate to contact us. We’re always pleased to help, and there’s no charge.

Trace Element Tea
One excellent
source of trace elements is fish scraps. You can use fish bones, heads, skins
and fish plate scrapings.
Put them into an
air tight container then cover with water and let it ferment. Make sure the lid
is fitted tightly to keep away pests and smells. It will take about one month to
be completely ready and completely decomposed.
When it is ready
it is a rich source of trace elements and must be diluted to a much weaker
solution
Comfrey Tea
You can use
comfrey as liquid manure, it is very high in potash. You can use this with any
fruiting plants, tomatoes, marrows, pumpkins etc. Just put the leaves in a
container and cover with water then close the lid. The comfrey will break down
very quickly and leave very little solid residue, which, of course, can be put
on the compost heap. You can then dilute the liquid to 1:10 to 1:20 for a
excellent plant and tomato feed.
Fungal Prevention
Tea
You can make a
fungal preventative from compost providing the compost has some animal manure in
it, otherwise it won’t work.
Put some compost
into a hessian bag and soak it in water for a few days. When it’s ready it will
be a dark brown liquid, dilute it to the colour of weak tea. Then spray on plant
leaves every ten or fourteen days.
